American Family Field is just a short drive away from a number of Milwaukee attractions, but there aren’t a lot of things to see and do immediately around the ballpark. Whereas many MLB parks are built in areas that have multiple attractions within walking distance, American Family Field is arguably more like an NFL stadium — built in an area that is largely surrounded by parking lots.
That doesn’t mean that you’ll suffer from a shortage of things to see and do before the gates open, however. American Family Field offers one of the best tailgating scenes in the big leagues, so plan on arriving good and early to partake in this fan-friendly experience. From the minute you climb out of your car, you’ll smell barbecues, hear country music, and see crowds of people enjoying tailgating games. While you can certainly bring your own supplies, don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to some Brew Crew faithful and join in their gathering.
While you’re waiting to get inside American Family Field, you may also want to spend a few minutes checking out the Hank Aaron trail, which runs past the ballpark and carries on all the way through Milwaukee to the edge of Lake Michigan. Even walking on this trail for a couple of minutes can be a cool experience for baseball fans. Speaking of Hammerin’ Hank, you’ll also want to seek out the landing spot of his 755th home run. There’s a plaque that marks this historic home run in Brewers Lot 1, which is immediately to the east of Helfaer Field, a Little League facility close to American Family Field.
Don’t forget to also leave yourself some time to take a leisurely stroll around the perimeter of American Family Field. You’ll notice a series of statues — Hank Aaron, Robin Yount, Bob Uecker and Bud Selig among them — and you’ll have plenty of good photo ops in front of the iconic American Family Field sign. Before you enter, you’ll also want to check out the Brewers Wall of Honor, which features plaques of the team’s notable stars. You can find it close to the Friday’s restaurant entrance.
