If you attend a baseball game and don’t take a selfie, were you even there?
There’s no question that a selfie can be a fun souvenir of your visit, as well as something you can share on social media during the game. To take a good selfie, you want a decent light source, the right pose, and the perfect backdrop. At any ballpark you visit, it’s important to spend some time assessing your backdrop options so that you choose the right one.
Here are five perfect places to snap a selfie at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
1. The Marquee
The most iconic selfie backdrop at Wrigley isn’t even inside of the park, so you’ll be able to cross this shot off your list before you enter. The Wrigley Field marquee is a red sign that hangs above the gates at the corner of N. Clark Street and W. Addison Street. It famously reads “Wrigley Field — Home of Chicago Cubs” and has a digital board that displays different information. Various advertisements pop up on the digital board, so it’s worth waiting to take your selfie until the board shows the day’s opponent and game time. You’ll unquestionably see lots of other fans taking selfies in this area, so position yourself and time your shot to eliminate background distractions.
2. The Ivy
Inside Wrigley, there are several notable features, but few have the appeal of the ivy that covers the outfield fence. It can be a perfect selfie backdrop, but you’ll need to get in the right position. Your best option is to head down either line to the foul pole, crouch, and then choose an angle in which the ivy is easy to see. Depending on where you stand, you may also be able to get one of the painted distance markers in the background of your shot, which can add to its appeal.
3. The Statues
There are several statues outside of Wrigley Field that can also serve as good selfie backdrops. Perhaps the most iconic is the statue of longtime broadcaster Harry Caray, which you’ll see at the Bleachers Gate at the corner of W. Waveland Avenue and N. Sheffield Avenue. There are four player statues inside of the Gallagher Way park space, located between N. Clark Street and Wrigley Field. The statues depict Ernie Banks, Ferguson Jenkins, Billy Williams, and Ron Santo.
4. The “W” Flag
The Cubs celebrate wins in several ways, but the most famous method is the raising of the “W” Flag over the scoreboard above the center field bleachers. This white flag with a large, blue “W” is iconic in Chicago; you’ll frequently see vehicles with “W” Flag bumper stickers and fans with this logo on their shirts and hats. If you’re in the bleachers at the end of a game in which the Cubs win, you’ll want to stick around to see the flag raised — and then snap a selfie with it behind you.
5. The Trophy Room
New for the 2023 season, the Trophy Room is a small space that gives fans the ability to see the Cubs 2016 World Series trophy up close. This room is situated off the home plate concourse and free to enter. A staff member is on hand to take your photo, but if you’re keener on a selfie, you can simply share this sentiment and take your own shot. The Trophy Room has a faux-ivy backdrop, which enhances the Wrigley Field feel.
