American Family Field replaced Milwaukee County Stadium, which was home to the Milwaukee Braves (1953 to 1965) and the Brewers (1970 to 2000), and opened at the start of the 2001 season. When you pull up in front of American Family Field, the first thing that you notice will almost certainly be its unique appearance. While every ballpark has its own flair, American Family Field gets its unique look from its retractable roof. But, unlike the roofs at Toronto’s Rogers Centre or Houston’s Minute Maid Park, this one is fan shaped — in fact, it’s the only roof of its type in North America. The Brewers strive to keep the roof open as much as possible, but you’ll almost always find it closed on cold days in April and September.
One must-see attraction at American Family Field is called The Selig Experience. It tells the story of former Brewers owner and MLB commissioner Bud Selig’s efforts to keep baseball in Milwaukee, and is equal parts informative and moving. A fixture at American Family Field since 2015, The Selig Experience is free to enter and found on the ballpark’s loge level, close to the left field foul pole. It’s a popular spot to visit and space is limited, so you may need to line up for a short period of time before you enter.
In Bernie Brewer, the team has one of the more iconic mascots in the big leagues. You’ll notice him at several points during the game, mostly while he’s in and around his aptly named Bernie’s Dugout home, which is located high above the left field corner. He famously slides down the bright yellow slide when the Brewers hit a home run and after they win.
