Segra Stadium is one of the newest ballparks in the minor leagues, and there’s a good chance it won’t be long after your arrival that you realize it’s one of the best. Take a short walk around, and it will become apparent that the park’s architect (Populous, which has designed more than a dozen MLB parks) thought of everything. Segra Stadium boasts great sightlines throughout the park, multiple creative seating options, a 360-degree concourse, and many other touches that will make you feel happy you’ve visited.
The ballpark opened in 2019, and has hosted the Fayetteville Woodpeckers in each season other than 2020, when minor league play was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Woodpeckers play in the Class-A Carolina League, one of four North Carolina teams on the circuit. Segra Stadium has a seating capacity of 4,786, which makes it one of the smaller parks in the league. Only the parks in Kinston, Lynchburg, and Augusta are smaller.
Fayetteville, of course, is widely known for being home to Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg) — one of the largest military installations in the world. The Woodpeckers pay tribute to the armed forces in numerous ways, including wearing specialty jerseys, providing space for military booths on the concourse on select nights, and having a large mural near the main gates that reads, “Victory Means a Little More Here.”
There are lots of spots throughout the ballpark that you’ll want to check out. One fun hangout spot is the Landing Deck, which is an elevated space in the right field corner. It has a variety of unique seating options, including couches, and offers tailgating games that all fans can enjoy. It’s only a few spots from Healy’s Bar, which is one of the most popular areas in the ballpark. Not far from the Landing Deck, you’ll find the ballpark’s enclosed batting cages. When you first arrive, it’s not uncommong to see players taking batting practice in this area, and you can watch the action through the windows.
For families, the children’s play area is one of the best that you’ll find at this level of the minor leagues — or at any level, really — and is located behind the left field concourse. Finally, the Birds’ Nest team shop is among the largest that you’ll see in the Carolina League, and offers a welcome source of air conditioning during those hot North Carolina afternoon games.
