After calling Kannapolis’s Intimidators Stadium home from 1995 through 2019, the city’s minor league franchise went through some major changes. Not only did the Intimidators rebrand as the Cannon Ballers, but they also moved into a new ballpark when the minor leagues resumed play after the pandemic-canceled 2020 season. The new park, Atrium Health Ballpark, is situated in downtown Kannapolis, about 10 minutes from the old Intimidators Stadium.
Atrium Health Ballpark was designed by Populous, the same architectural firm that is responsible for so many notable parks around the big leagues. The ballpark’s capacity of 4,930 makes it one of the smaller parks in the Carolina League. You won’t likely find that Atrium Health Ballpark seems small, however. Its careful design and open areas offer a pleasing feel that combines an intimate feel with plenty of spaciousness.
The ballpark boasts a 360-degree concourse, with several enticing seating options across the outfield. While there aren’t standard folding seats beyond the fence, you’ll find a roomy grass berm in left field, a multilevel bar in right-center, and a lengthy row of Adirondack chairs in right field.
There are numerous things to note during your visit. The ballpark’s batting cage is situated on the first base side and is visible from the sidewalk along Cannon Baller Way. The structure has roll-up doors that allow fans to watch players as they go through their pregame hitting. It’s a fun activity that can whet your appetite for baseball before you even enter the park. Children will likely enjoy this sight, and if you’re visiting with kids, be sure to visit the children’s play area off the third base concourse.
One of the gems of Atrium Health Ballpark is local musician Jason Atkins, who uses the moniker “Greazy Keys.” He sits at a vintage Hammond organ on the concourse behind home plate and injects lively music into the gameday experience. You’ll want to spend a few minutes watching his impressive performance and appreciating the presence of live organ music at a ballpark in today’s age.
